The History Department at Bielefeld University has organised itself into several so-called profile areas, each of them being constituted by several professorships. The profile area “Culture/History: Politics - Image - Materiality” brings together the positions for Visual and Art History, Gender History, Historical Theory, Political History, and Contemporary History. Their shared teaching and research approach centres on two main aspects. Firstly, it analyses the processes by which historical actors and agents produce, stabilize, and transform societies, cultures, and cultural artefacts. Secondly, it emphasizes the theoretical reflection of the heuristic categories, approaches, media, and practices of our own historical research. At the same time, it promotes cross-epochal and interdisciplinary perspectives. From the position holder, active participation in the research and teaching activities of the profile area is expected. In turn, the profile area offers collaboration among researchers from different status groups on an equal footing, providing a cooperative and innovative working environment free from rigid hierarchies. Close integration and versatile, continuous support are guaranteed.
